Thank you for your willingness to coach a youth program. This orientation is designed to introduce you to your responsibilities as a youth coach and to acquaint you with available resources.

BEFORE BEGINNING THIS TRAINING:
1. Complete the Heads Up Concussion Training Course and download your certificate. You will upload it on the next page of this orientation. The Head Up Concussion Training is required once every three years. If your certificate is already on file with Recreation, you may complete this orientation.
2. Visit the Brigham City Police Department for your background check. We require a new background check each year. Complete the background check form here and print it out, but DO NOT SIGN IT until you are in the presence of a Brigham City Police Department employee and can show photo ID.

After you have completed the first two steps, click on "Next" to begin the orientation.

Have you completed the Heads Up Concussion Training Course in the last three years?

Upload your certificate here. If you do not have your certificate, log in to your training account and download it.

Have you submitted your background check paperwork to the Brigham City Police Department?

If you answered "No" to either of the previous two questions, STOP! You are unable to complete this orientation because you have not completed the required earlier steps. Please submit your background check information and concussion training and then try again.

Our recreation youth staff is excited to help you have a positive and successful season. On the following pages, they will introduce the rules and expectations to you. Some pages have additional information. Please watch all the videos and read all the additional information.

Facility expectations

Philosophy of youth sports

  • Everyone Plays: Our program goal is for kids to play. We mandate that every player on every team must play at least half of every game.
  • Balanced Teams: Each year we form new teams as evenly balanced as possible because it is fair and more fun when teams of equal ability play.
  • *POSITIVE COACHING: Encouragement of player effort provides for greater enjoyment by the players and ultimately leads to better skilled and better motivated players.
  • *GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP: We strive to create a positive environment based on mutual respect rather then a win-at-all costs attitude. Our program is designed to instill good sportsmanship in every facet of Brigham City programs.

Cooperation with officials

Expectations for coaches

  • Keep it simple: Most sports are relativity simple to play and can be enjoyed by all ages. Overcomplicated formations, plays and strategies tend to confuse and frustrate youth. By keeping it simple, it will build self-esteem and confidence.
  • Work on the basic skills: Younger teams especially should concentrate on fundamentals. Teach skills and concentrate on the basic. Stop the action often to help individual players improve, but don’t interfere excessively.
  • Work with every player on your team:  The most highly skilled and least skilled players on your team should be given equal attention. Every player should be helped to improve the ability and enjoy the game. It is important that every player participates and has fun, rather than just a few good players dominating the action.
  • Teach ‘Fair Play’: Playing fair is an essential part of youth sports. Respect for one’s self, teammates, the other team, the rules and the officials who uphold them.
  • Help players set and evaluate individual goals: Competing against oneself is perhaps the best way to improve skills, help players measure their skills.
  • Keep winning in perspective: Winning games is only one of the many goals that are important in sports. Help players and their parents become aware of other goals: learning skills, becoming better physically fit, being a good leader and good follower, dealing with the emotions of sports and having fun.

T-Ball Rules

These rules are available on our Coach's Corner web page.

The purpose of this league is to teach all the participants the basic rules of the game as well as develop recreational and social skills.

  1. There will be a Tee provided at each field by staff.
  2. Home team will take the third base dugout and wear white.
  3. Only coaches who have completed all requirements will be given a badge and allowed on the field. Please no older children on the field to help coach, must be 18 years or older and have completed coaching requirements. When the games are finished, please give your badge back to a staff member.
  4. The Practice/Play Format will be: 50 minutes long with the timer starting at the scheduled time, so please be ready to start at the scheduled time. Practice/Play Format: First 20 minutes will be practice; the last 30 minutes will be the actual game.
  5. Coaches are responsible for managing their lineup and the field. Home plate will be managed by a staff member.
    1. A game can start with a minimum of six players.
    2. Please place only 6 players in the infield with 4 players in the outfield beyond the baselines. This teaches the positions better and avoids overcrowding.
    3. There is NOT a catcher position in this league. No players are allowed behind or near the plate unless they are the batter.
  6. When a player gets out, they must return to the dugout; they can’t keep running the bases. We are not playing three outs, but we do want the players to learn that when they are called out, they must sit down.
  7. Every player will bat each inning. The last batter on the lineup may run all the way around the bases until they are called out or score.
  8. The umpire has the sole discretion of calling, suspending, or forfeiting a game because of weather, darkness, sportsmanship, etc.
  9. HECKLING: Heckling by the players or fans will not be tolerated. The coach of each team is responsible for his/her players’ and fans’ conduct. At the discretion of an umpire or field coordinator, the umpire or field coordinator will warn the offending team’s coach. A second warning is caused for suspension or forfeit.
