Philosophy of youth sports

  • Everyone Plays: Our program goal is for kids to play. We mandate that every player on every team must play at least half of every game.
  • Balanced Teams: Each year we form new teams as evenly balanced as possible because it is fair and more fun when teams of equal ability play.
  • *POSITIVE COACHING: Encouragement of player effort provides for greater enjoyment by the players and ultimately leads to better skilled and better motivated players.
  • *GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP: We strive to create a positive environment based on mutual respect rather then a win-at-all costs attitude. Our program is designed to instill good sportsmanship in every facet of Brigham City programs.

Cooperation with officials

Section 8 of 15 in this document

Expectations for coaches

  • Keep it simple: Most sports are relativity simple to play and can be enjoyed by all ages. Overcomplicated formations, plays and strategies tend to confuse and frustrate youth. By keeping it simple, it will build self-esteem and confidence.
  • Work on the basic skills: Younger teams especially should concentrate on fundamentals. Teach skills and concentrate on the basic. Stop the action often to help individual players improve, but don’t interfere excessively.
  • Work with every player on your team:  The most highly skilled and least skilled players on your team should be given equal attention. Every player should be helped to improve the ability and enjoy the game. It is important that every player participates and has fun, rather than just a few good players dominating the action.
  • Teach ‘Fair Play’: Playing fair is an essential part of youth sports. Respect for one’s self, teammates, the other team, the rules and the officials who uphold them.
  • Help players set and evaluate individual goals: Competing against oneself is perhaps the best way to improve skills, help players measure their skills.
  • Keep winning in perspective: Winning games is only one of the many goals that are important in sports. Help players and their parents become aware of other goals: learning skills, becoming better physically fit, being a good leader and good follower, dealing with the emotions of sports and having fun.

T-Ball Rules

These rules are available on our Coach's Corner web page.

The purpose of this league is to teach all the participants the basic rules of the game as well as develop recreational and social skills.

League Bylaws:

  • Home team will take the third base dugout and wear white.
  • Games will start at the scheduled game time every week.
  • There will be a Tee, bat, and t-balls provided at each field by staff.
  • Only coaches who have completed all requirements will be given a badge and allowed on the field. Please no older children on the field to help coach, must be 18 years or older and have completed coaching requirements. When the games are finished, please give your badge back to a staff member.
  • The umpire has the sole discretion of calling, suspending, or forfeiting a game because of weather, darkness, sportsmanship, etc.
  • HECKLING: Heckling by the players or fans will not be tolerated.  The coach of each team is responsible for his/her players’ and fans’ conduct. At the discretion of an umpire or field coordinator, the umpire or field coordinator will warn the offending team’s coach. A second warning is caused for suspension or forfeit.
  • Please Hustle on and off the field between innings.

Game:

The game will be 50 minutes long with the timer starting at the scheduled time, so please be ready to start at the scheduled time.

Practice/Play Format: First 20 minutes will be practice; the last 30 minutes will be the actual game.

  • A game can start with a minimum of 6 players.
  • Please place only 6 players in the infield with 4 players in the outfield beyond the baselines. This teaches the positions better and avoids overcrowding.
  • There is NOT a catcher position in this league. No players are allowed behind or near the plate unless they are the batter.
  • NO STEALING IN THIS LEAGUE. BASERUNNERS CAN ONLY ADVANCE ON A HIT.
  • When a player gets out, they must return to the dugout; they can’t keep running the bases. We are not playing three outs, but we do want the players to learn that when they are called out, they must sit down.
  • Each player in the lineup will bat once per inning. The final batter may continue advancing around the bases until they are put out or score. Each team will bat its entire lineup—if one team has 8 players, all 8 will bat; if the other team has 10 players, all 10 will bat. After all players have batted, teams will switch sides.

Coach Pitch Rules (Boys and Girls)

These rules are available on our Coach's Corner web page.

Skill Development is our top priority, not the scores.

League Bylaws:

  • Home team will take the third base dugout and wear white.
  • Games will start at the scheduled game time every week.
  • Team line ups are due to the scorekeeper: 10 minutes prior to game time!
Assign a coach to assist catchers with their gear so they can get ready quickly and keep the game moving without delays.

Game:

  • The game will be 60 Minutes. All games will be Drop Dead.
  • A game can start with a minimum of 6 players. The game has open substitution. This allows a coach to freely move players in and out of the field without penalty.
  • Please place only 6 players in the infield with 4 players in the outfield beyond the baselines. This teaches the positions better and avoids overcrowding.
  • NO INFIELD FLY RULE IN THIS LEAGUE
  • Players CAN NOT call time to stop runners from advancing! Time is awarded by the umpire only!
  • Players MUST slide at home when being played upon.
  • NO STEALING IN THIS LEAGUE. BASERUNNERS CAN ONLY ADVANCE ON A HIT.

A side out is awarded when:

3 fielded outs are made

6 runs are scored

OR

The entire lineup has batted

Pitching:

Coaches will pitch to their own team while batting. Coaches are encouraged to pitch from the 35-foot mound; however, they may move closer if needed based on player ability. Both coaches should pitch from a similar distance to keep play fair and consistent.

  • Girl’s Coaches: Please throw underhand to players.
  • Boy’s Coaches: You can choose to throw underhand or overhand to players.

*Both leagues are required to have a player in FULL catching gear behind the plate.*

Batting:

  • 4 good pitches per player: When there is a foul ball on the 4th pitch an additional pitch will be awarded.
  • Every player bats: if they come late they may be added to the bottom of the line-up.
  • If a player is hit by a pitch thrown by the coach, they will remain in the batter's box and will not be awarded first base. We want all players to have the opportunity to hit.

In this league when at bat you cannot strike out or walk. Teach the players to be aggressive and want to hit the ball; this will advance their skill level for the coming years

U6 Soccer Rules

These rules are available on our Coach's Corner web page.

This league is to encourage all participants to learn the basic skills of soccer, while also learning how to interact with other participants in a positive, safe atmosphere. Coaches and parents are expected to be examples in creating that positive and safe atmosphere by participating in good sportsmanship on and off the field.

  1. A size 3 soccer ball will be used during the games.
  2. 3 vs 3 games. NO GOALIES. We support equal playing time. If a team is not rotating players equally, Brigham City may require the team follow a substitution outline.
  3. There are no forfeits in this league. A game will be organized with players that are present.
  4. A game consists of a 25-minute practice followed by four 6-minute quarters. 1-minute quarter breaks. 3-minute halftime interval or when players are ready.
  5. Substitutions are only between quarters and at the three-minute mark of the quarter unless a player is injured. The clock will stop long enough to sub players in and out. The substitution break is just to sub players in and out (30-seconds or less), not a break to coach. Play will restart from where the ball was.
    1. Free substitutions at dead balls.
  6. In the event of an injury, the game will be stopped, and the player should be replaced.
  7. Players must not wear anything that is dangerous to themselves or others (i.e. jewelry, watches).
  8. Closed toe shoes are required. Soccer cleats can be worn. NO METAL OR TOE CLEATS.
  9. SHIN GUARDS ARE MANDATORY.
  10. A reversible Brigham City Soccer jersey must be worn. Cold weather clothes can be worn under the jersey. Home team will wear white. Away team will wear blue.
  11. Brigham City Recreation staff will officiate the games. One coach is allowed on the field only if needed to help assist the players. Parents must remain on the sideline.
  12. Home team chooses which goal to attack at the start of the game. Away team kicks off to start the 1st & 3rd quarters. Home team kicks off to start the 2nd and 4th quarters. Switch sides at halftime.
  13. Kick-off, free kick, goal kick, corner kick, and throw-in: The ball must be stationary before being kicked. All defensive players must be at least 5-yards away when the ball is kicked. The kicker/thrower cannot touch the ball after the kick/throw until another player has touched it. Thrower must keep both hands on the ball, bring the ball all the way behind their head, and keep both feet on the ground. If a throw is done incorrectly, the player gets one more chance to rethrow and then the ball goes to the other team.
  14. Kick-off:
    1. Ball is placed on the center line in the center circle. Ball can be kicked forward or backward.
    2. Defensive players must be on their own half of the field and outside of the center circle.
    3. Offensive players must be on their own half of the field. Can be inside or outside of the circle.
  15. The entire ball must cross the whole line to be out of play or score a goal.
  16. Free Kicks:
    1. Awarded on fouls (kicks, trips, strikes, or pushes an opponent), hand balls, and dangerous plays (i.e. sliding, heading the ball, high kicks).
      1. NO SLIDE TACKLING. No kicking the ball while the player is on the ground.
      2. Heading the ball is NOT allowed in games or practices.
    2. All free kicks will be indirect (the ball must touch another player before going in the goal).
    3. No penalty kicks (PK’s).
    4. Any free kick within 5-yards of the goal box will be moved to a distance of 5-yards away from the box in a straight line from the center of the goal.
  17. Goals CANNOT be scored on a kick-off, throw-in, free kick, corner kick, or from a team’s own defensive half.
    1. A goal can only be scored from a touch on the offensive half of the playing field.
  18. Goal Kick:
    1. Will be taken from the goal box (arc).
    2. Non-kicking team must stay behind the edge of the center circle until the ball is kicked.
  19. Players may only enter the goal box (arc) to kick the ball.
    1. If defensive players stand in the goal box for an extended period (“puppy guarding”), it will result in a free kick for the opposing team. Defensive players should be taught to go after the ball.
    2. If there is a safety concern with too many players being in the goal box, the referee can blow their whistle to help prevent players falling into the goal. Will result in a goal kick.
  20. The offside rule is not in effect.
